Week 5 - Thoughts on Capstone Project, Internship Opportunities, and Graduate Programs

Comments on Classmates’ Journal Entries                                  https://jhammondcsumb.blogspot.com/2024/05/week-4.html#comments https://brennancsonline.blogspot.com/2024/05/cst-300-week-4.html#comment-form Potential Capstone Project Ideas After viewing some capstone projects from previous cohorts, I’ve learned a little about what will be expected from this CS Online program. Here are a few ideas that I can think of on the spot. These don’t necessarily reflect anything that I will end up doing. IoT home lighting and blind opener/closer with Raspberry Pi. -This project would make use of the IoT via Raspberry Pi. It would entail linking the device to a light switch and shutter switch to give the user control over options. Past moon cycles with augmented reality. -This device would allow people to use ...

Week 4 - Setting Goals and the Ethics Behind Using AI

Setting Educational Goals One goal I’d like to set based on my curriculum is to develop solid fundamental skills in project-based development. For me this is going to be the meat and bones of my educational career. To achieve this, I’m going to have to study algorithms, data structures and project-based development intensely not just in class, but outside of class in my personal time. I want to get to the point where I can comfortably tackle projects and deal with problems that arise along the way. Setting Career Goals The most important career goal I currently have is obtaining complete confidence that I’m able to go into the working world without having the fear of imposter syndrome. While imposter syndrome is common, I still want to prioritize building confidence in my abilities. By approaching interviews with honesty and showing my genuine skills, I’ll feel even more confidence to be able to secure a job. I truly believe authenticity is key in interviews. I can also say...

Week 3 - An Emphasis on Ethics

An Improvement on a Study Skill Last week I identified 3 of my weaknesses when studying - creating a schedule, sticking to a schedule, and selecting an appropriate place to study. After reviewing study techniques (AcademicTips.org, n.d.). I’m going to focus on selecting the best place to study. My room is my typical study spot. Most of the time my room is a great choice for studying because I have all my study materials near and available to me. I have my desk and my PC with all my files on my hard drive. However, sometimes have a hard time focusing in my room because I can be distracted by things that are happening at home. Many students experience the same thing and say that they go to the library to study. However, I do not have a library within a reasonable distance. Because of this I can resort to coffee shops. But like many students, distraction from background noises is a big problem for me. Coffee shops may also create an environment where I’m not able to focus. Somethi...

Week 2 - A Focus on Study Skills, Projects, and Collaborative Work

Reviewing and Reflecting on Learning Strategies Effective Study Skills (Kizlik, 2020) presents various study tips and advice for strengthening skills for better studying. I have some strengths in some of the mentioned skills, but I may need a little work in some other studying areas. Three areas I believe I’m strong on are surveying, outlining, and efficiency. For me, surveying is an integral part of studying. I need to have a sense of purpose and understanding of what it is I’m about to dive into. I normally do this by reading the main topics and focusing on the desired outcome, then I’ll go back and analyze the steps it takes to get there. Furthermore, I’d say I’m quite organized and tactical in my approach to my study sessions. It’s more of a mental organization, but it helps me have structure to my studying time with. This leads me into my last skill, I tend to be quite efficient with my time. Although I do not make and keep to a schedule, but when I work, I’m locked in and ha...
