Week 6 - Exploring Capstone Ideas

Developing Capstone Ideas with Teammates

This week I got the opportunity to explore different capstone project ideas with my teammates in Group 1.

Adrian proposed using OpenAI and LLama to develop a custom language model that provides advice for students based on their majors and grades. He is also interested in making an app for flashcards, where users can create, export, and review flashcards locally. This would allow users to manage their study materials easily on their personal devices.

Andrew suggested developing a real-time dashboard to track lunch times so that companies can track work hours and reduce overtime costs. This would help make sure that the technicians he oversees are balancing their workloads and that his company is minimizing unnecessary expenses. Andrew also mentioned writing a machine learning program to play or beat a specific game this would basically just be to showcase AI skills.

I had two ideas myself. My first one is to use a Raspberry Pi to create an IoT system for controlling home lighting and blinds. This would give users the ability to manage their home remotely.

My second idea is to develop an application that allows users to view past moon cycles. I think this would be particularly interesting with an AR headset but it can be implemented more simply with a mobile or desktop app.

I think all of these ideas are feasible and would all help showcase our skills in project-based software development.

Week 6 Recap

I think my biggest takeaway from this week was the modules that were covered in the Open Learning Initiative. It helped me understand how I can engage with my teammates when problems arise. The module allowed me to practice making positive assertions in difficult situations and I believe I can carry this technique out in many areas in my life.

I also got a chance to refine my cover letters and resumes for internships. This exercise was also helpful practice for the job market in general too.
